RESIDENTIAL
MOFFETT COURT | AGNES WATER | QLD
Located at the top of a steep hill, with 270° views towards 1770, Round Hill, and the Pacific Ocean, this fully off-grid home has been designed with sustainability and sensitivity to its site at the forefront.
Sleeping and waking spaces have been orientated to allow a morning view of the sunrise over the over the ocean, whilst entertaining and unwinding spaces are positioned to enjoy the evening sunset to the West. The main living and working areas both face north to allow maximum light throughout the day.
Reflecting the site's semi-tropical setting, walls, wall openings, eaves and verandas have all been strategically arranged to create shade, capture the sloping site's natural breezes, and to facilitate stack ventilated breezeways throughout.
During the cooler winter days, passive heating is provided by thermal mass, in the form of a polished concrete floor flanked by large areas of northern glazing. This acts as a solar collector when the sun stays low during the winter, storing heat during the day and slowly expelling it back into the home at night. When the sun is high during the summer, conversely, large eaves provide shade and earth coupling dissipates warm air into the ground below.
The design and angle of the roof maximises the surface area available for rainwater collection, whilst also providing the optimum angle for solar energy harvesting.
